Tales of the Maya Skies
Thursday, February 29, 2024
Thursday, February 29, 2024
We reserved the WVU Planetarium on Thursday, February 29, 2024 exclusively for retirees to see an introduction entitled Night Sky Tonight and the film Tales of the Maya Skies. The Night Sky Tonight is the planetarium’s most popular intro lesson and gives all audiences the basic tools to get oriented to the night sky. The film,Tales of the Maya Skies, is a journey back in time to the beautiful jungle city of Chichén Itzá and the world of the ancient Maya. It is about how this ancient civilization learned to interpret the world around them to develop a sophisticated understanding of astronomy, mathematics and science - knowledge that has influenced much of our present day learning.

The February book was The Truth About Animals: Stoned Sloths, Lovelorn Hippos, and other Tales from the Wild Side of Wildlife by Lucy Cooke. You've probably never considered if moose get drunk, or worker ants lay about. They do -- and that's just for starters. In this book, Lucy Cooke lays bare the secret -- and often hilarious -- habits of the animal kingdom.

Painting Empty Bowls
Wednesday, January 24, 2024
Wednesday, January 24, 2024
Retirees started the new year with a charitable activity. They painted bowls at the WOW Factory in Star City for the Empty Bowls Monongalia luncheon. Members bought the bowls. The WOW Factory provided the paints, fired the bowls, and delivered them to the Empty Bowls staff. Our retirees did a wonderful job and we were able to send beautiful bowls to the Empty Bowls organization. Go retirees!

The December book was The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey by Candice Millard. The River of Doubt is the true story of Theodore Roosevelt’s harrowing exploration of one of the most dangerous rivers on earth, the River of Doubt, a black, uncharted tributary of the Amazon that snakes through one of the most treacherous jungles in the world. Roosevelt accomplished a feat so great that many at the time refused to believe it. In the process, he changed the map of the western hemisphere forever.
